Aspen Woods and West Springs are two of Calgary’s most sought-after residential communities, and it’s sure not hard to see why. Both feature great homes, a laid back suburban environment, plenty of local amenities, and of course, some of the most well-ranked schools in the entire city. Aspen Woods and West Springs should be on your radar if you’ll be buying a home in Calgary soon and are looking to find the right neighbourhood.
That said, although they are similar, Aspen Woods and West Springs do have a few notable differences. So, if you’ll be house hunting in Calgary soon, you’ll want to have an idea of how each community may suit you and your family.
Location & Getting Around
Both Aspen Woods and West Springs are located in West Calgary, almost as close as you can get to the city’s western boundary.
Aspen Woods stretches from 69 St SW all the way up to the western edge of the city, along Stoney Trail. The community’s southern border runs along 17 Ave SW, while the northern edge is defined by 12 Ave SW. Located immediately north of Aspen Woods, West Springs runs from 12 Ave SW in the south up to Old Banff Coach Road.
As you may expect, because Aspen Woods and West Springs are located fairly close to one another, they offer the same degree of commuter-friendliness with both neighbourhoods being an easy drive (about 15 minutes) from the downtown core. However, when it comes to Transit Score and service, Aspen Woods is slightly better than West Springs. This is because the 69 Street C-Train Station is located in Aspen Woods’ southeastern corner.

Who Lives in Aspen Woods & West Springs?
A little bit of background, both neighbourhoods began development around the same time: the early 2000s, and, as next-door neighbours, Aspen Woods and West Springs were designed to offer a similar lifestyle. As a result, the demographics and community fabric of each area are similar (with a few exceptions).
Both the populations of Aspen Woods and West Springs are diverse, with a mix of families, professionals, and retirees – all of whom come from a dynamic range of backgrounds, creating a local atmosphere that is welcoming and multicultural. However, where these two communities mainly differ is in the average local income and by extension, the real estate profile.
As the more affluent of the two, Aspen Woods is often associated with luxury and upscale living. The neighbourhood boasts a wide range of high-end homes, including spacious single-family houses, modern townhouses, and even some custom-built properties. Given the neighbourhood’s elevated profile, homeowners in Aspen Woods are diligent about property upkeep, some hiring professional landscapers to look after their yards and driveway year-round.
While there are luxury homes in West Springs, the overall real estate prices tend to be more affordable compared to Aspen Woods. Of course, the area is far from low-income, however, West Springs offers a slightly more varied housing market, with a mix of single-family homes, some townhouses, and a few more options for renters. This makes the community an especially attractive option for young families and first-time homebuyers.
Family Dynamic & Lifestyle
Another similar aspect of life in Aspen Woods and West Springs is the family-oriented atmosphere and overall community feel.
Developed with families in mind, Aspen Woods is known for its serene suburban environment. Along with many family homes, you’ll find well-maintained parks, playgrounds, and sports fields around the community. West Springs, while also family-oriented, has a slightly more dynamic and bustling atmosphere.
The sense of community in both neighbourhoods is strong, with various events and activities organized throughout the year to bring neighbours together. That said, West Springs is known for its active community associations, which organize a range of events, from farmers’ markets and festivals to fitness classes and youth programs.
